Food FAQ

How is Rainbow Kitchen different from other weekday kids' food services?

We differ from most other options on the market in a few of the following ways:

  • Community-driven. Rainbow Kitchen exists to serve the families in its community. We’ll be actively soliciting parent (and kid!) feedback on menu items and more to make sure our offering is the best it can be. We hope you’ll follow us on Instagram and sign up for emails so that we can get input from you.

  • The best ingredients. While most services offer fresh food (vs. frozen), we’ve found few that prioritize organic ingredients the way we do. We also never use highly-processed ingredients and work to source locally when possible.

  • Balanced nutrition. Our meals are crafted by a nutritionist and doctor, referencing macronutrient guidelines from the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Many of the services we’ve reviewed are not actually balanced.

  • Mission-driven. We believe that the food landscape in the U.S. is fundamentally broken, which makes it that much more difficult for hard-working parents to raise healthy and happy eaters. We want to help families—and be a force for change.

Is my child going to like the food?

We think so! Rainbow Kitchen can only achieve its mission if little eaters like the food we cook up. Here is our approach:

  • Crowd-sourcing. Our menu will be designed with feedback from our community, i.e. you! If you haven't already, you can take our food survey here.

  • Favorite foods. We will prepare yummy, recognizable foods, pasta and chicken nuggets, but prepared with better ingredients and healthier cooking methods.

  • Fun. We’re not above sneaking in veggies and other macronutrients when we can. And we love a good dip, shape or other fun food format.

  • Positive peer influence. We also believe that when multiple Rainbow Kitchen kids sit down to eat together, they will encourage each other to try new things and enjoy the food.

Do you offer a trial?

Absolutely! Here is the link.

Do you accommodate allergies and other dietary restrictions?

In accordance with the policies of our school partners, our food is peanut-free and tree nut-free. However, we currently incorporate some common food allergens in our menu, and also cook in a shared facility that may come into contact with common allergens (eggs, fish, milk, peanuts, sesame, shellfish, soy, tree nuts, wheat). Therefore our service is not a good fit for any child with one of these food allergies or any kind of severe food allergy.

If your child has a minor food sensitivity, please let us know in the corresponding fields on the product page and at checkout. You can also send us a note before placing an order if you'd like to check with our team first!

Our current menu does not incorporate any pork products. We hope to be able to accommodate more dietary restrictions very soon!

What ages do you serve?

Our food is suitable for children 18 months of age and older. If you have any questions about whether our meals and snacks are a fit for your child, please send us a note!

How do you develop your menu?

In real time, based on school feedback about each meal, and input from parents like you!

Every meal will follow the same formula, with a recognizable favorite food, a combination of nutritious carbs, proteins and fats.

How can I see the daily menu?

For the carbohydrate and protein, we try to follow the schedule on our homepage as closely as possible, although there are sometimes changes based on ingredient availability.

We also post our menu as a daily Instagram story! Find us at @rainbowkitchenkids.

How do you select your ingredients?

We will prioritize the use of fresh, organic ingredients, free of harmful additives. Specific ingredients will vary based on availability and seasonality.

What are your snacks like?

We take snacking to the next level.

Our snacks offer a combination of protein, fiber and carbohydrates which deliver long-lasting, regulated energy—perfect for learning, and growing! Made with fresh, whole, organic ingredients and superfoods like chia seeds, our snacks are free of harmful additives found in many children's packaged foods.

Our morning snack is typically baked good. Something delicious, freshly made and packed with nutrients. Examples include chickpea flour banana muffins, fruit and coconut granola bars, cheese-y protein waffles and apple carrot "morning glory" muffins.

In the afternoons, we deliver another dose of regulated energy with fruit and cheese or yogurt.

Delivery FAQ

How does it work?

If your school is already a Rainbow Partner, you can select your meal plan here and subscribe whenever you are ready! We delivery lunches and snacks directly to partner daycares and schools. Your mornings just got a lot easier.

Where do you deliver?

We proudly serve families across Brooklyn, starting with daycares and schools in Williamsburg and Greenpoint, where we launched in 2024. Since then, we’ve expanded to more neighborhoods throughout Brooklyn and continue to grow every month.

Manhattan families, you’re next! We have a growing waitlist and are excited to bring Rainbow Kitchen’s fresh, nutritious meals to schools and daycares in Manhattan very soon.

What should I do when my child is absent from school?

Thanks for asking! To reduce waste, please keep us informed as much as you can.

When you know in advance that your child will be out of school, send us a note at hello@rainbowkitchenkids.com.

Do you use stainless steel containers at schools?

We used to deliver meals in stainless steel containers, but some schools found that switching to a simpler system made daily logistics smoother. Since then, we've transitioned to using non-toxic, fully biodegradable containers made from corn sugar (PLA). They’re safe for kids, environmentally friendly, and designed to break down naturally—so you can feel good about what your child eats from and what it leaves behind.

For schools choosing our family-style service, the impact is even greener—meals arrive in reusable ceramic containers, cutting down on single-use waste and reinforcing your school’s sustainability commitment.

Subscription FAQ

Fork

Does my subscription start immediately when I subscribe?

When you sign up, your child’s meals will start on the first school day of the next month.

Do you offer a sibling discount?

Yes! Families with two or more subscribed children can sign up with this link which offers 20% off our plans.

What is your cancellation policy?

We’re excited to be part of your child’s mealtime routine! To keep every meal fresh and made with the best ingredients, we plan and purchase supplies in advance.

Because of this careful planning, we ask for a minimum one-month commitment and require 30 days’ notice if you need to pause or cancel.

Since we buy ingredients ahead of time, we’re unable to offer refunds for unused days. We appreciate your understanding—it helps us maintain the quality and consistency your child deserves.

We’re here to support your family and make mealtime easy, healthy, and joyful every day!

Could I pause our subscription while we're on vacation?

If you plan to be away for more than one week, please let us know at least 30 days in advance, and we’ll be happy to pause your subscription during that time.

Please note this pause option doesn’t apply to school-wide closures, which follow the regular school calendar.
